Fitness in Teenagers Today

‘We’re living in different times’… The times I’m speaking about are a few days shy of 2020…

The digital and social realms are capturing the time and attention of teenagers today as never before… Hand held, pocket sized, electronic devices allow entertainment and communication today, in ways that would have been unimaginable when I was a teenager back in the late 90s…

So we did what most teenagers back then could do with the ample time we had… Play sports… Whatever kind scratched your itch… From the light, agile no contact kind like badminton all the way to getting a few ribs roasted in a boxing ring…

We competed with a child like fury and saw more than a reasonable share of skinned knees and the occasional fracture… We spent our subjectively frugal pocket money on sports gear and of course on music CDs or cassettes… 

The times seem a bit different now… I see a massive dip in cardio and conditioning levels of teenagers in most Metropolitan Indian cities today as opposed to some 20 years ago… I mean there certainly are exceptions.

Some exceptionally fit and talented young ones roam our streets with pride, but on a larger scale, things seem different… The lure of easy access to digital entertainment seems to be a major cause in the drop of fitness levels in teenagers today… 

Most parents, teachers and elders are concerned and are doing the right thing in encouraging the young ones to spend time, attention and financial recourses in a pursuit of a healthier tomorrow but so much more can be done… Needs to be done… Awareness, access to fitness in forms of parks, gyms and sports centers and most importantly encouragement, guidance to the youth of this nation…

The importance of a healthy lifestyle primarily focused on nutrition and physical fitness is grossly underrated… The young listen, they really do… But one has to speak their language… Communication here is imperative for getting desired results… One can communicate a point effectively in any conversation, when one has adequate and accurate data…

Get in touch with fitness and nutrition experts in your environment… Be it schools, a gymnasium in your neighborhood or a fitness or sport specialist in your vicinity and take some advice, tips on the matter…  

Parents, teachers, loved ones… The teens of this country need a direction towards a healthier and fitter tomorrow… We all have a crucial role here to nudge them in the correct direction… Wherever there is scope for communication with teens or youth, please guide, advice and steer them towards health and fitness…

The future depends on every little gesture and effort by each and every one of us…
