An Analysis of UFC Fight Night ‘Joanna vs Waterson’

So… UFC Joanna vs. Waterson or UFC Fight Night 161 took place on 13th October 2019, 05:30 AM IST (Indian Standard Time), in Tampa, Florida, USA…

In the main event, former champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk, beats ‘The Karate Hottie’, Michelle Watterson via unanimous decision in a rather one sided fight… I gave all five rounds to Joanna. I mean this was just a masterful performance by the boogie-woman… Her jab was quick and precise, and she really worked in this quick muay thai leg kicks…

She was clearly the physically stronger fighter in the clinch and had michelle pressed up against the cage landing good elbows and knees to the body… Waterson landed some decent leg high kicks as is her weapon of choice but it did very little to really affect the offence of Joanna… Waterson just could not hurt Joanna with anything, though she did get the back a few times but could not really do much damage from there…

I mean I really like Michelle Waterson but the takedowns which seemed like an important part of her game plan were just not up to the mark and her boxing didn’t really bother Jędrzejczyk … Joanna’s high output is just a fantastic weapon and she kept backing Michelle up with that pressure…

All in all a great game plan for the former champ and she comes away with a dominant victory…

In the Co-main event, Ol veteran Cub Swanson put on a great show and beats Kron Gracie via decision… I mean those body shots by Swanson would have slowed down a rhino but Kron is one tough dude…

I really like the way Cub was constantly moving in, landing quick, effective combinations and then angling away at the end… Kron, to his credit landed some decent shots on Swanson and the damage showed on both their faces by the end of the fight… Cub kept the fight in that sweet kickboxing range where he likes it and though Gracie had some crazy guard-pulls in there, Cub, being the veteran that he is, didn’t allow it to go to the ground…

Cub played the perfect matador here and came away with the win…
Other notable points… An absolutely crazy KO by Niko Price with that upkick from hell… And a pretty solid performance by Amanda Ribas to beat Mackenzie Dern via unanimous decision…

More words to come as the MMA train moves along… Until next time……
